On Monday, July 23, 2012, at around noon, the Montvale Fire Department (NJ) had a house fire on Windsor Avenue just over the Pearl River border.  Pearl River Fire Department was first called to the scene as FAST but was quickly moved into Fire Attack.  As Montvale started to call for more resources from their neighbors the volunteers from Orangeburg were called to "Standby" at their quarters in the event they received other emergencies.

Within ten minutes of standing by in the Montvale Fire House we were relocated to the scene to act as FAST.  Once on the scene our volunteers constantly monitored the fire ground as it was becoming more dangerous.  The fire had gotten into the walls and the entire structure was charged with smoke and fire.  Thankfully no one got hurt or trapped.

While investigating a smoke odor at Dominican Convent the volunteers were alerted for a second call - 327 Route 303 - The Eastern House.  44 Control advised 11-2, Neil Lynady, that they had received an alarm for the exhaust hood in the kitchen.  11-2 sent 11-3, Pete Byrne, along with the 11-Tower and the 11-2000 to Eastern while he stayed at Dominican with the 11-1750.

At The Eastern House the Interior Crew noticed the ansul system had deployed plus the employees used two extinguishers. Because of the potential of the fire getting into the duct work the crew from the Tower was sent to the roof to observe conditions.  Both the Interior and Roof crews used thermal imaging cameras to ensure no fire had extended from the grill.

On Saturday morning, July 14, 2012, the Orangeburg Fire Department was sent to Instrumentation Labs on Route 303.  Once on the scene Chief Chris Jackson was informed that they had a natural gas leak in the warehouse.  Just three weeks prior the volunteers had met with the management of Instrumentation to review their operation and emergency plans.  The volunteers also performed a "walkthrough" of the entire site to familiarize themselves with the buildings layout and contents.  This information proved very valuable at this call.

With Orange & Rockland's assistance Chief Jackson located the source of the leak - a main line feeding the sites overhead heating units.  Gas to the entire structure was shut down and repairs began.

On Wednesday morning, July 11, 2012, the Spring Valley Fire Department was called out for an apartment fire.  Once on the scene Spring Valley's Assistant Chief realized this was going to be more than one apartment.  The fire had already burnt through the roof of the building and was getting larger by the minute.  Our volunteers from Orangeburg were called for a FAST - a team of firefighters that operate on the scene to protect the firefighters.  The 11-EQ responded with senior firefighter JP Yore.

Damien Amadi and Emanuel "Manny" Pimentel finished their Firefighter 1 Course at the Rockland County Fire Training Center in Pomona on Friday, July 13th. The NYS Firefighter 1 Course is close to eighty hours of lecture and hands on training. The summer course is an accelerated course where the students are in class all day, several days a week and on the weekends. The course is over within three weeks - short but very intense.

On the last day of training the recruits do their final "Live Burn" in the Burn Building and Orangeburg was well represented. Captain John Ahlf was one of the instructors and our 11-Tower was used along with New City's engine. Thankfully the humidity had lessened but it still was a hot morning.

Congratulations to our newest "Brother Firefighters" Manny and Damien!!!
